About this movie...
I read the book so I knew going into it that it would be brutually sad. But I loved the book so I was excited to see it. Of course I think the book was way better. But while there were some aspects that were left out, I do think the movie stayed pretty true to the real storyline. I do have to say that when the movie first started I was feeling like the acting felt a touch forced.....maybe one dimmensional even. But as it went on I became more immersed and by the end was completely in love with both of these characters. It's almost like Hazel said in the book (and the movie) that she falls in love with Augustus slowly and then all once. I kind of felt like that about the movie...I feel in love with it slowly and then all at once. The book on the otherhand....well I picked it up one afternoon and didn't put it down until I was finished with it later that night. It was more of a falling in love all at once thing!
I also want to comment on how this story is being promoted as the latest "teen book/movie." Yes...it was certainly about teenagers. But I think that it has plenty to offer adults as well. The relationship between Hazel and her parents (which they didn't delve as deeply into in the movie as they did in the book) can be emotional for any parent to think about. It had me thinking about my own child and family the whole way through: It made me think about my relationship with my husband and how we would cope together if god forbid we should ever lose our child; It also made me think about our own experience with cancer (Dave had cancer when we were younger...he's been clear for well over 5 years now)...and how incredibly lucky Dave was to have come out the other side of it; and how lucky we were to be able to conceive a child after his bout with cancer. And of course, this story points out, as Hazel's father tells her in the book (but not the movie), that no matter the pain of going through an experience like they've had with their child....you will never regret it because it's your child and you love them with all of your heart.
Overall, this is about the sweetest, most inspirational, and heart wrenching love story I've seen in a long time. One of the characters, Peter Van Houten says in the story...that characters in fiction are just that, fictional characters, so it doesn't matter what happens to them once you finish the story. But I can't stop thinking about Gus and Hazel. And what may happen with Hazel and her parents after this particular chapter in their lives is done.
Oh and if you do see the movie...bring some tissues-I don't think there was a dry eye in the theatre. There was even some loud sobbing coming from one side of the theatre that was slighlty comical and annoying at the same time!
Happy Wednesday!
